Happy New Year! Old Man Winter blessed our little valley with lots of snow during the holidays. That’s fun for the skiers, but it’s also important to cover the meadows to insulate the ground which protects plants and animals from freezing temperatures. Most of our annual moisture comes in the form of snow, so average winter precipitation is crucial for healthy summer meadows, wildflowers, and reduced wildfire risk. This is one of the many examples of how the web of life is so intricately woven.
We just learned that the Wyoming State Parcel in Grand Teton Park, known as the Kelly Parcel, has officially become National Park land! It’s a great conservation win to protect this crucial wildlife habitat. We also just learned of the identification of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the Fall Creek elk herd near the Hoback/Bondurant area. This deadly disease affects hoofed animals, and feed grounds are increasing the spread of the disease. Due to development, elk now winter on about 25% of their historical range. Wildlife management agencies strive to find solutions to balance new winter habitat pressures, size of the elk population, and the effects of human development. Changes to feed grounds are probable.

As 2024 draws to a close, we all have a chance to reflect and manifest. I am grateful to live so closely with wild nature. Grateful for time with my aging parents and family. Grateful for our community and its strong passion for the natural environment. May we find compassion and kindness in our hearts, joy for others, and love for all creatures.
Happy New Year,

Big wins for the West during this past year
The Biden administration has helped the Earth and slowed the threats to biological diversity and climate change. From fence removal to protections that allow the Grey Wolf and Gray Whale populations to grow. Locally, the Wyoming state parcel surrounded by Grand Teton National Park was approved for sale to Grand Teton and will be protected. Tribal lands have been restored and Indigenous people have been able to reclaim land. Wins for diversity, community, and the planet.

Rekindle Your Connection With Nature
Backcountry Tips
- It’s imperative to control your dog(s) to limit ANY/ALL wildlife disturbances. Let’s do our part to give wildlife space and not impact their chances of survival.
- All backcountry recreationists traveling in avalanche terrain should be equipped with and know how to use avalanche beacon, probe pole and shovel. Click here for a list of locations where you can practice.
Field Facts
- As snow deepens and winter grows longer, ungulates (hooved animals) become weakened and become easier prey. Please minimize any disturbance when you head out to play.
- The vectors of winter (snow, cold, radiation, energy and wind — know as SCREW) effect everything in nature. Preparation is key for people, plants and animals.
Tour Suggestions
If you are new to the area and the winter environment, have visiting friends or family, or just want to learn more about the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, join us on a guided tour. We focus on exploring areas off the beaten track to discover the wonders of winter, the solitude and the beauty. If you want to explore on your own, we recommend a trip to Taggart Lake in Grand Teton National Park. Visit JH Nordic for the grooming report and to learn more about winter trail status.
