The photo was taken in Grand Teton Park and shows how a grouse slept in the snow for warmth. The top hole is where the animal plunged into the snow. You can see the wing marks. It burrowed to find a depth of warmth. To be insulated by the snow. The lower hole is where it emerged after a night’s sleep. Snow is an amazing insulator once you have about eight inches.
